Paddle Wavey Creek (rescheduled from September 18)
Contact / Registration: Kevin & Anita Miller -- register at k.a.miller@mts.net . 15 people have registered as of October 1.
Location / Time: Launch from along Wavey Creek Road at 10:00 AM. There are actually many places to launch along that road. Please plan to arrive at 9:30. Kevin & Anita will arrive very early to help guide you to the exact launch location.
Carpooling: It is customary for paddling partners to carpool together. Otherwise, if you are bow paddler who'd like to catch a ride with someone carrying a canoe or kayak, let us know.
Description: We've launched from Wavey Creek Road 4 times in the past 4 years. There are 4 different possible routes -- plus variations -- and many possible distances. (GPS tracks are available on request.) Distances and lengths of time from launch to takeout have ranged from 13K to 19K and 3 hours to 5 hours. When you register, you can indicate your preference for route and/or distance and/or time. Wavey Creek, Medicine Creek, Muckle Creek, and Netley Creek are very wide in most places -- much wider than the Seine River and the La Salle River, and backflow from Lake Winnipeg and the Red River provides reliable water depth with minimal current.
Lunch: We’ll stop for lunch at an appropriate location at an appropriate time.
Toilets: There aren't any formal toilets along our paddling route.
Boats: If you don’t have a canoe or kayak, we can try to partner you with a canoe owner who is looking for a bow paddler.
Rating: Novice (bow paddler in the canoe of an experienced stern paddler) to intermediate.
Bring: Lunch, water, sunscreen, your name tag, and extra warm clothes.

A Natural Legacy: What's New at Living Prairie
Presenter: Marika Olynyk and Josh Pearlman Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2024 Location: Westworth United Church at 1750 Grosvenor Avenue in Winnipeg Admission: $5 for members (non-member rate $10) Living Prairie Museum is a unique urban nature preserve that protects endangered tall grass prairie. Join us to learn more about caring for this beautiful and unique site, and about conserving Winnipeg’s prairie legacy. We'll discuss caring for the prairie, including the challenges of a dynamic and rare ecosystem facing many threats. Less than 1% of this incredibly diverse ecosystem still remains in Manitoba. We will review some of Living Prairie Museum’s prairie restoration and plant propagation projects, including work recently supported by Nature Manitoba. We also discuss how to help build and support prairie within the city.
Marika Olynyk is the Curator of Living Prairie Museum with the City of Winnipeg’s Natural Services Branch. An environmental educator and ecologist, she has worked in education and outreach with Parks Canada, Nature Conservancy of Canada, and Alberta Parks. She holds a Master’s degree in Natural Resources Management, and has worked extensively on prairie ecology, including pollination and avian studies, and land management planning. A Nature Manitoba board member since 2019, Marika also sits on the Steering Committees for two Nature Manitoba partner programs: Important Bird Areas Program and Bridging the Gap Program.
Josh Pearlman is a Technical Assistant and acting Education Coordinator with the City of Winnipeg's Naturalist Services Branch. His educational background includes programs in landscape design, environmental studies and botanical science. For over fifteen years he has been fortunate to work in roles that combine habitat conservation and public education around the tall grass prairie and boreal forest ecosystems of Manitoba.
