Cycle the Mesabi Trail in NE Minnesota [cancelled]

Cycle the Mesabi Trail in NE Minnesota [cancelled]

Outdoor Activities:

Event Date:

September 23, 2024 to September 27, 2024

Trip Rating:

INTERMEDIATE

Contact / Registration:

Abe Friesen -- register at abeexing@gmail.com  Please contact Abe ASAP if you are possibly interested in attending this trip.

Location: Mesabi trail. (Starting point -- Eveleth, Minnesota)

Description:
The Mesabi Trail is a long paved trail (~162 miles ... we’ll cycle 140K) that meanders through the woodlands and the iron mining areas of northeast Minnesota.
Tentatively, the plan is to park our cars at the starting point, and after the 3-days of cycling, we will shuttle drivers from the end point to the start point.
One vehicle, with alternate drivers, will shuttle our tents and camping gear to campgrounds as we cycle along the trail. In this way, the trip will be supported. Any cyclist concerned about distance, ability, or a breakdown, will have the option of being picked up and shuttled to the night’s campground.
Unfortunately, we won’t accommodate electric bikes on this trip.
Once people register an interest with Abe, he will keep them informed on an ongoing basis as to who else is registered, along with ongoing plans and pricing options.

Tentative plan:

Day 1, Sep 23 -- Drive to Eveleth (Eveleth Veterans Park & Campground on Ely Lake)

Day 2, Sep 24 -- Cycle from Eveleth (Eveleth Veterans Park on Ely Lake) to Chisholm (Chisholm Iron Trail Campground). 16K & 31K = 47K

Day 3, Sep 25 -- Cycle from Chisholm (Chisholm Iron Trail Campground) to Pengilly (Swan Lake Resort & Campground). 54K

Day 4, Sep 26 -- Cycle from Pengilly (Swan Lake Resort & Campground) to Grand Rapids (Itasca County Fairgrounds – campground). 39K

Day 5, Sep 27 -- Drive home.

Bring: Your sense of adventure, your bicycle, tenting and camping gear, Grey Hares name tag.
