Birding for Beginners Series 2024
Event Date: April 30, 2024 to May 28, 2024 The perfect way to learn about birds and birding! If you are interested in learning the basics of birding but don't know where to start or you need help identifying birds, this series of outings is for you. The outings take place every Tuesday evening from April 30th to May 28th and always start at 6:30 p.m. These outings will be led by Ward Christianson and Marlene Waldron, and possibly other knowledgeable birders. Due to overwhelming numbers for these events registration is now required on Eventbrite. Members will be free to register and a $5.00 fee will apply to non-members (per event ticket). Note there is a limited number of tickets available.

Cycle from Seel Station
Location: Meet at Seel Station Park & Ride.
Time: Start cycling at 11:00 AM.
Description: Complete a clockwise loop heading north to The Forks, circling down to St Vital Park for lunch, and then through the University of Manitoba or Bridgwater before returning to Seel station.
Distance: Approx 40K.
Duration: 3 to 4 hours.
Bring: Your name tag, lunch, water.

Shoal Lakes, St. Ambroise and Delta
This outing will provide a good chance for seeing many waterfowl, grebes and herons, raptors and shorebirds. A visit to the PR. 227 garbage dump may turn up a rare gull. We will depart (carpool) from the northwest corner of the Garden City shopping mall parking lot at 7:30 a.m. The outing will be led by Garry Budyk and Josh Dewitt. Chimney Swifts
Location: Earl Grey Community Club, 360 Cockburn St. North Fee: $10 for Nature Manitoba members (or students), $15 for non-members Have you ever heard of Chimney Swifts?
Chimney Swifts are a unique bird that live nest in chimneys, clinging to the vertical walls with their long claws. Unfortunately, their populations are declining rapidly. The Manitoba Chimney Swift Initiative works to monitor swifts across the province and protect important swift habitat, including repairing old chimneys. We will talk about threats to Chimney Swifts, how to identify them, and the many ways you can contribute to swift conservation.

Whitemouth Falls Provincial Park

Please join Roger to hike at Whitemouth Falls Provincial Park. Wear appropriate clothing , hat and footwear . ( Trail is uneven ) , Bring water and lunch .
Meet at 9 am at Kildonan Crossings at northwest corner of Regent and Lagimodière close to Starbucks . Please be aware that the Starbucks has relocated to around where the Royal Fork buffet used to be. Carpooling will be arranged and driver should have valid Manitoba provincial park pass.

Oak Hammock Marsh hiking and birding

Location: Oak Hammock Marsh is located 20 kilometers north of Winnipeg between Stonewall and Selkirk.
Time: 10:00 AM.
Description: Oak Hammock Marsh Birding: A leisurely stroll around the cells of the marsh with binoculars to observe returning birds and water fowl. There will be be groups of 12 or less led by experienced birders. Hiking: Slower paced and faster paced walking groups around the cells of the marsh for the other participants. Trails map
Lunch: The cafe in the Wetland Discovery Centre is under construction. You can bring a lunch and eat at one of the picnic tables outdoors, or you can eat in Stonewall.
Bring: Your name tag.

Libau/Beaconia/Brokenhead Wetland
We will look for prairie, wetland and woodland birds north of Libau. Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Vireo, Orchard Oriole, Bobolink, Nelson’s Sparrow, Virginia Rail and a variety of warblers, raptors and shorebirds are all possible. We will finish the outing with a walk along the boardwalk at the Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve. Meet at the Boston Pizza at the southeast corner of Chief Peguis Trail and Henderson Hwy. at 7:30 a.m. for a departure at 7:45 a.m. sharp. Eight Annual Memorial Bird Blitz
Event Date: May 25, 2024 to May 26, 2024 Contact / Registration: No registration is necessary
The event is in memory of all the birding friends we have lost over the years. Participation is open to all, from backyard birder to Big Day enthusiast. The idea is to enjoy birds at your own pace and submit a list of your sightings, plus area(s) covered, to Rudolf Koes (rkoes@mymts.net) after the event. No registration is necessary. Results will be reported on manitobabirds after the event, as well as on the Nature Manitoba website.

Paddle Seine River
Time: Meet before 9:30 AM. Launch before 10:00.
Launch location: Happyland Park from the west end of Prosper Street. There is a large grassy area to launch from.
Description: We will paddle upstream to the culvert at the Windsor Park Golf Course, and then turn around and paddle downstream to the launch location (14K). Some of us may also then want to paddle downstream to Marion Street and beyond ... and back to the launch site. The Seine River within Winnipeg is fairly shallow and very popular, and there are dozens of potential locations to disembark if needed. Paddling the Seine
Lunch: We’ll stop for lunch at a good location along the river at noon.
Boats: If you don’t have a canoe or kayak, we can try to partner you with a canoe owner who is looking for a bow paddler.
Rating: Novice (bow paddler in the canoe of an experienced stern paddler) to intermediate.
Bring: Lunch, water, sunscreen, your name tag, and extra warm clothes.

Centennial Trail Hike
Hike the east end of the Centennial Trail beginning at McGillivray Falls in Whiteshell Provinicial Park, about 4 hours hike duration with a lunch break. Much of this route is on glacier-rounded granite bedrock. [intermediate] Wear appropriate clothing and footwear; bring water and lunch. Departure Location & Time: Southdale Mall, McDonald’s at 8:45am
