Presentation:

Diversifying Winnipeg’s Urban Forest – Challenges for the Future

Description:

The presentation will examine the current state of Winnipeg’s urban forest with an emphasis on tree species diversity. Urban forest management approaches are being implemented to increase tree diversity and to provide opportunities to increase resilience to climate change and insect pests and diseases. Future impacts on urban tree health and survival from new biological and physical threats are examined along with opportunities to mitigate potential tree loss and continue to improve the health and sustainability of the urban forest resource.

Presented By:

Professor Richard Westwood is a member of two Departments (Biology and Environmental Studies and Sciences) at the University of Winnipeg. He received his PhD from the University of Guelph and has worked in the environmental industry, provincial government forestry branch and has been a professor at the University of Winnipeg since1998. He teaches courses in entomology, urban forestry and aboriculture, forest health and protection, research design and methodology and environmental impact assessment. His current research focuses on a wide variety of topics including improved urban tree health and protection techniques in urban forests and commercial forestry, landscape conservation and protection of threatened and endangered insects and plants in prairie and forest ecosystems, impacts of forestry management activities on forest succession and biodiversity in boreal forests and assessing how climate warming will influence changes in diversity in the provinces forests and prairies.

All are welcome and there is no charge to attend.
