Bird Outings

Bird outings are held on a regular basis throughout the year, primarily in the spring/fall. They are a great way to share knowledge and meet other people interested in Manitoba birds. Note that a trip's difficulty is rated using the following Trip Rating Guidelines.

North, West, and East Shoal Lakes IBA Blitz

Our fall program begins with an exciting opportunity to visit the excellent North, West and East Shoal Lakes. The data generated will give us a flavour of the populations of birds in this globally significant place for nature. Shoal Lakes IBA is a great place to see rare species including large wading birds, shorebirds and migrant water and songbirds.

Assiniboine Park

Early September is usually a good time to look for hummingbirds, warblers and other passerine migrants in the area around the English Gardens. Join Rudolf Koes at 8:00 a.m. at the footbridge for this morning outing. No registration is necessary.

Elma/Seven Sisters

Peter Taylor will lead this outing, which was highly successful in recent years, with sightings of numerous Bald Eagles, two Golden Eagles, Sandhill Cranes and more. Scoters are possible.

Lake Winnipeg Beaches

Late fall is a good time to look for lingering waterfowl, raptors and gulls along the beaches of S.E. Lake Winnipeg. Winter passerines, such as Snow Buntings and redpolls, should also be present.

Christmas Bird Count 2018/19

This is a great opportunity to see some wintering birds in the city. Join tens of thousands of other birders across North America in this event and help contribute to our knowledge of winter bird distribution. A potluck dinner and compiling session will be held afterwards.
