Swallows in Flight
All photos taken in Manitoba by Christian
Artuso
(above) Bank Swallow: Note notched
tail and small-headed appearance.
The
diagnostic breast band and white collar may be obscured in
silhouette
(above) Northern Rough-winged Swallow:
Square tail
and brown throat best features
to distinguish from Bank Swallow,
although the latter may be hard to judge in silhouette.
Also
usually
shows more contrast between the pale base of the underside of the
primaries and the axillaries.
(above)
Cliff Swallow 1:
Note how in silhouette the pink and rufous colors can be obscured
(the
bird on the top left for example could be mistaken for a Northern
Rough-winged Swallow,
although note difference in tail
and wing shape)
(above) Cliff Swallow 2: Of course
the contrasting pale rump and collar are unmistakable in these views.
(above) Purple Martin: Even in
silhouette distinctive – large size, notched tail and that long-winged
elegant shape.
