Here's a photo composite of a Northern Saw-whet Owl taken in Winnipeg on Jan 26th nd 29th, 2006
Saw-whets are unusual in the city and a winter record is even more odd,
although this winter and last there have been a few reports of this species,
perhaps related to the warm temperatures. This bird was present in the same area
for approximately two weeks and was originally reported by Gord, Pat, and Colin McKie,
whom I thank for their generosity. The owl was hunting regularly around a bird feeder
with a great deal of spilled seed. Rodent tracks were noted near the feeder
and a single pellet I found and dissected contained the remains of a House Mouse.
