Outdoor Activities

Nature Manitoba conducts a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. Our activities include canoeing, hiking, cycling, snowshoeing, camping, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor recreational pursuits. All Outdoor Activities are free for members, with the exception of any cabin/park fees if applicable, and the Grey Hares group is listed separately. Non-members may attend a trip or two at no cost, in order explore the option of membership. Before registering for a trip please review the safety requirements and the difficulty rating using the following Trip Rating Guidelines. Activities will also follow the Nature Manitoba Dog Policy.

Note: Nature Manitoba follows all provincial health orders and masks are recommended but optional at indoor activities. Please review trip descriptions carefully or contact the trip leader individually to confirm their requirements. 

Nature Manitoba Outings

Spring Soundwalk

General Trips / NOVICE

Join a 90-minute soundwalk around the Assiniboine River in Winnipeg. Participants will walk, stop and listen to the sounds of spring, including returning migratory birds. Meet at William Marshall Park/Dominion Park at the south end of Dominion Street in Wolseley at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 20.

Winnipeg River

Bird Outings / INTERMEDIATE

During spring migration stretches of the Winnipeg River attract numerous waterfowl. Geese, swans, diving ducks, grebes and loons are all expected. We also hope to see a number of raptors and songbirds. The outing will start at the Seven Sisters Falls parking lot at 9 a.m. and from there we will make our way downriver.

Birding for Beginners Series 2024

The perfect way to learn about birds and birding! If you are interested in learning the basics of birding but don't know where to start or you need help identifying birds, this series of outings is for you. The outings take place every Tuesday evening from April 30th to May 28th and always start at 6:30 p.m.

Paddle Seine River or La Salle River -- postponed (cold water)

Description: Stay tuned. Water will be quite cold on May 1, which is why we are paddling on a narrow river.

Shoal Lakes, St. Ambroise and Delta

This outing will provide a good chance for seeing many waterfowl, grebes and herons, raptors and shorebirds. A visit to the PR. 227 garbage dump may turn up a rare gull. We will depart (carpool) from the northwest corner of the Garden City shopping mall parking lot at 7:30 a.m. The outing will be led by Garry Budyk and Josh Dewitt.

Libau/Beaconia/Brokenhead Wetland

We will look for prairie, wetland and woodland birds north of Libau. Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Vireo, Orchard Oriole, Bobolink, Nelson’s Sparrow, Virginia Rail and a variety of warblers, raptors and shorebirds are all possible. We will finish the outing with a walk along the boardwalk at the Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve.

Eight Annual Memorial Bird Blitz

The event is in memory of all the birding friends we have lost over the years. Participation is open to all, from backyard birder to Big Day enthusiast. The idea is to enjoy birds at your own pace and submit a list of your sightings, plus area(s) covered, to Rudolf Koes (rkoes@mymts.net) after the event. No registration is necessary.
